Helping a Prestige Trade Publisher Expand into a New Area

Mayo Clinic Press is building a world-class publishing program featuring authors and experts from around the world who weigh in on a broad scope of health subjects, including thought leadership, mental health, history, biography, the frontiers of medicine, and more. That includes books and digital content for kids and young adults.

Its goal is to build bridges to reach people from all walks of life, at all stages of life—shining a light on the most fascinating stories in medicine and enabling individuals with the knowledge to build healthier, happier lives for themselves, their families and their communities. Proceeds from the sale of books and subscriptions are used to further important medical research and education at the world-famous Mayo Clinic.

As part of a billion-dollar brand, Mayo Clinic Press has a history of keeping most of the work on its books in-house to ensure high quality. But when they started a new Trade list, they found themselves with a resource and time crunch. They needed a partner who could not only deliver top-tier Trade books while working with the company’s prestigious authors in a way that reflected their esteem but also manage costs and adhere to the company’s stringent guidelines for typesetting and file-preparation—and do it all quickly enough to meet fast-approaching printing and publication deadlines.

Newgen worked closely with Mayo to talk through and confirm a bespoke workflow. Newgen added extra time for author care (coordinating with in-house editorial staff at every stage) and fact-checking. Newgen also ensured a quality author experience by assigning the projects to US-based staff with Trade experience and hiring topline freelance copy editors and proofreaders; it ensured that the typesetter could keep the process moving quickly.

To address cost concerns, for example, Newgen leveraged its resources to find the most efficient way to handle artwork and create ePub and accessible ePub files.

The final files were delivered on time and within budget and met the Press’s high—and very specific—standards; the authors felt happy and cared for.
