Elevating Academic Publishing: Schlager Group’s Strategic Digital Transformation with Newgen

Since 2008, Schlager Group, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, has been dedicated to producing reference titles tailored for high school and undergraduate college students, focusing on primary source documents and earning industry recognition. These titles cater to History and AP History courses at the high school level and various undergraduate courses, serving a broad academic audience.

Challenges in Content Hosting and Distribution

As a small- academic  publisher, Schlager Group faced significant challenges in hosting and distributing its content. Existing third-party solutions were inadequate, particularly in meeting the needs of the library market. Schlager sought to enhance discoverability, accessibility, and user experience, necessitating an innovative solution.

Strategic Partnership with Newgen

To address these challenges, Schlager Group partnered with Newgen, leveraging their expertise to develop a comprehensive solution. Newgen streamlined typesetting procedures using their SaaS solution, which is renowned for its capabilities in designing templates and indexing tasks. This partnership was instrumental in transitioning Schlager’s content into a new platform called the Schlager Digital Library, hosted and distributed through Nova, Newgen’s cloud-based web and mobile publishing platform for scholarly content.

Leveraging the IP Registry for Seamless Access

A pivotal aspect of this transformation involved using the IP Registry databases to authenticate institutional IP addresses. The IP Registry maintains a comprehensive repository of validated IP addresses for over 70,000 content licensing organizations globally. By integrating this data, Schlager Group ensured seamless access to content for institutional customers without the need for individual authentication.

Enhanced User Experience and Operational Efficiency

Nova’s secure hosting solutions, customizable to meet publishers’ needs, optimized content display across devices, supporting the dissemination and accessibility of scholarly materials. This strategic setup aimed to simplify content access for campus patrons. Utilizing the IP Registry’s data, Schlager Group now authenticates access for customers efficiently, allowing IP address updates to be activated within two hours of approval.

Benefits for Customers and Library Staff

This streamlined process has significantly enhanced the user experience for Schlager Group’s customers on the Schlager Digital Library, enabling effortless communication of IP address updates to multiple publishers. Library staff are encouraged to manage IP addresses for authentication and usage metrics by creating a user account, ensuring efficient processing and verification of subscribers’ IP address updates.

Strategic Transformation in Action

Schlager Group’s strategic partnership with Newgen and the integration of the IP Registry database have transformed its content hosting and distribution processes. This collaboration has not only enhanced discoverability and accessibility but also significantly improved the user experience for academic institutions, reinforcing Schlager Group’s position as a leader in the academic publishing industry.
